Lynn, MA Sewer Separation Phases 4 & 5

Sewer Construction

Lynn, MA

Project Highlights

The City of Lynn’s combined sewer treatment plant couldn’t handle the overflow during heavy rain—this sewerage overflow ended up in Boston Harbor. P. Gioioso was brought on to separate the system into sewage and drain so that a new plant could properly handle all weather conditions.

New sewer and drainpipes were installed in 90%+ of the neighborhoods in this section of the city. In some sections drains were able to be rehabilitated, using a cured-in-place pipe liner. This large, complex job involved working around a matrix of existing water, sewer, electric, and natural gas utility pipes, and included deep installations that ran 20 feet below grade and 12 feet below sea level. The teams used deep wells to control the water when working below the water line. All contaminated soil was properly disposed of.

When all project phases are complete, the city will have dramatically reduced flooding and the impact of sewerage overflow on surrounding water.
