Upper Neponset Valley Replacement Sewer

Deep Trench, Sewer Installation

Dedham, MA and Boston, MA

Project Highlights

A 100-year-old sewer system wasn’t able to handle flooding from heavy rainfall, causing sewage backup into the Neponset River and connecting waterways, including the Charles River. The goal for this large project was to significantly reduce sewage outflows. The challenge was that it needed to be a very deep excavation—with trenches as deep as 35 feet.

To solve the overflow and backup problem, P. Gioioso installed a tremendous amount of pipe—more than three miles of pipe, ranging in diameter from 12-inch to 60-inch along VFW Parkway and adjacent streets. During construction 8,000 linear feet of the abandoned MWRA pipeline were infused with 2,000 cubic yards of controlled density fill and the roads were reconstructed.
