4 Million Gallon Pump Station Storage Tank

Deep Excavation

Somerville, MA

Project Highlights

To relieve flooding in Somerville and create storm water management infrastructure, P. Gioioso was hired to excavate for, and construct, a 4-million-gallon underground storage tank which will address drainage for about 60% of the city. This tank is being built at the future site of ArtFarm—a park, urban agriculture site, and arts hub. To begin the project our crews conducted a 40-foot-deep excavation at the half acre Poplar Street site and then poured concrete for the 1200+ cubic yard base of the tank. The tank’s walls are next in line for construction. When completed in 2025, the tank and its affiliated pump station will reduce Combined Sewer Overflows (CSOs) and enable the city to better handle extreme weather events.

The client was impressed with the work on the tank and had added construction of the pump station to the project.
