North Terminal Railyard

Rail Yard Construction, Contaminated Soil Removal

New Bedford, MA

Project Highlights

This project was established to help the city of New Bedford subsidize the costs of its harbor cleanup. By revitalizing the old north terminal, the city was able to move contaminated dredge material from the harbor to its proper disposal point in bulk, circumventing the main part of the city. The 32-acre railyard site contained high levels of contamination. For this project, the old rail yard was disassembled, and environmental barriers were put into place. Contaminated soil was removed, and over 100,000 CY of clean fill was installed to cap the contaminated site. The new rail yard was rebuilt on this base with 9000 feet of railroad track installed to create six tracks and interconnecting lines.
