Upper Neponset Valley Replacement Sewer

Project Managers: Joseph Bettencourt / John Gioioso
Engineer: Fay, Spofford & Thorndike, Inc.
Client: Massachusetts Water Resources Authority
Construction Cost: $36,000,000
Construction Schedule: March 2005 - September 2008

The project consisted of furnishing and installing 1,800 linear feet of 12-inch to 18-inch PVC sewer pipe and 10,200 linear feet of 24-inch to 42-inch Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer sewer pipe (in trenches as deep as 35 feet) in the VFW Parkway and all appurtenant work. It also included furnishing and installing 1,800 linear feet of jacked 60-inch steel casing pipe in the VFW Parkway and Baker Street and all appurtenant work. The vastness of the project involved the installation of 15 linear feet of 12-inch PVC sewer pipe and 235 linear feet of 15-inch PVC sewer pipe in LaGrange Street, 1,170 linear feet of 15-inch PVC sewer pipe in Charles Park Road and Gardner Street, 440 linear feet of 16-inch ductile iron sewer pipe in Charles Park Road, 1,420 linear feet of 30-inch Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer sewer pipe in Baker Street, and all appurtenant work. During construction, approximately 12,000 feet of existing 15-inch to 48-inch clay and brick sewer (portions of MWRA Sections 529-526) were abandoned, and 2,000 cubic yards of controlled density fill infused 8,000 linear feet of abandoned pipeline. The purpose of this project was to replace the old pipe that was not able to handle flooding, and, as a result, the flooding was causing sewage back up into the Neponset River during heavy rainfall.
